Is pet insurance worth it for a Turkish Van?

A Turkish Van is among the rarest cat breeds. They are a large breed known for their stunning white coats and bright blue eyes. They are intelligent, affectionate, loyal, and get into mischief. It’s no wonder that a Turkish Van can be prone to accidents and injuries. Injuries can be costly to treat, mainly when treatment requires surgery or additional procedures.

Medical bills for treating a sick Turkish Van can quickly add up, costing up to a few thousand dollars. In these situations, you don’t want to be in the middle of a crisis and have to choose between your beloved cat and the affordability of their medical treatment.

To prepare for these unexpected circumstances, consider investing in pet insurance. It can help you afford your pet’s medical treatments and procedures, while you focus on your cat’s recovery.

Pet insurance can also provide peace of mind that your cat can be covered for the necessary treatments when it has an accident, injury, or illness. This includes (but is not limited to) broken bones, cancer treatment, harm caused by another animal, and prescriptions for chronic conditions. Therefore, pet insurance can be important and beneficial for your pet.

Common health conditions for a Turkish Van

The Turkish Van is known as one of the healthiest cat breeds. However, they can be prone to a few common cat health issues:

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): In HCM, the heart muscle thickens and makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. This increases pressure in the heart, leading to an enlarged heart and eventually congestive heart failure. Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and exercise intolerance.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy: PRA is a hereditary disease because it is passed down through families (genes). As the disease progresses, your cat will begin to experience blindness at night or in low-light situations and eventually may lose vision completely.
  • Subaortic stenosis: This congenital disorder is expected in aTurkish Van and is characterized by narrowing of the aorta leading from the heart to the rest of the body. It can lead to high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms if not treated early.
  • Panleukopenia: This is a highly contagious viral disease that causes fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The infection can be fatal in young cats or those with a weakened immune systems. Prevention is the best strategy for dealing with panleukopenia, so it’s essential to have your cat vaccinated against it.
  • Calicivirus: This condition causes respiratory distress, ulcers in the mouth and tongue, and diarrhea. It is sometimes fatal. Calicivirus can be prevented by vaccination.
  • Rhinotracheitis: This viral disease causes flu-like symptoms but can lead to pneumonia if left untreated. Antibiotics are usually needed to fight the infection, but the virus will take its course, and recovery will take several weeks. There is also a risk of long-term damage to the eyes or lungs.
  • Rabies: Caused by a virus transmitted via an infected animal’s saliva (usually through a bite), rabies can be fatal if left untreated but is easily preventable with vaccinations.

What does pet insurance cover for a Turkish Van?

Pet insurance covers a range of diagnostics, treatments, and procedures for your cat. Based on your plan, you are eligible for the following coverage:

  • Accidents: Many plans cover accidental injuries and poisoning. This can include swallowing a toy or a ball, jumping off a couch and fracturing a leg, getting hit by a car, or being attacked by another animal.
  • Illness: Most plans also cover illnesses related to the heart, eyes, ears, skin, digestive system, and more. For example, if your cat develops diabetes or your cat starts having seizures, you can get those conditions covered.
  • Routine care: Some insurers offer regular care coverage as an optional add-on to their policies. This can include vaccines and exams, spaying or neutering, teeth cleaning, flea prevention, and other treatments.

In addition, most insurance providers will not cover pre-existing conditions that were established before you registered your pet for coverage. Be sure to review everything your potential pet insurance plan covers and what types of pre-existing conditions they exclude to ensure your pet will be eligible for coverage

How are pet insurance premiums determined for a Turkish Van?

There are many factors that will determine the monthly premium rate for your Turkish Van (included but not limited to):

  • Location: Certain areas have higher risks, such as natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes, which can result in a higher number of claims and higher costs for insurance companies. This means your premiums will be higher. Also, urban areas tend to have higher veterinarian costs, so your premium will have a higher monthly rate.
  • Age: Younger pets are typically less costly to insure because they’re less likely to develop chronic conditions that cost more to treat over time. Older pets tend to cost more because their medical needs increase as they age.
  • Deductible: Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in, affecting your monthly premium. The lower your deductible is, the higher your monthly premium will be.
  • Gender: Male cats are more prone to certain health problems, and they are also more susceptible to injury due to accidents and their more territorial. This means male cats have higher premiums.

How to choose the best pet insurance plan for a Turkish Van

There are many pet insurance options available for a Turkish Van, so how do you choose the best one? Here are some key factors to keep in mind as you are deciding on the right plan:

  • Check out the company’s reputation: The company should come with a good reputation. A company with many complaints about claims or lousy customer service is not likely to be your best bet.
  • Consider your budget: Ask yourself how much you can afford to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs (called “deductibles”). If you’re on a tight budget, look for a plan covering a high percentage of each claim, with lower deductibles and reimbursements.
  • Consider pre-existing conditions: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from most pet insurance policies. If your cat has arthritis or diabetes, it might be challenging to find coverage for those conditions.
  • Define your needs: Look at where your pet goes and what activities it enjoys to decide how much coverage you need. If your cat is a female, it probably won’t need the same amount of coverage as a male cat.
