Is pet insurance worth it for a Selkirk Rex?

Insurance helps to cover pet-related expenses. As a cat owner, you want the best for your Selkirk Rex. We have seen so many people struggle financially due to their unconditional love and care for their pets for many years now. Here are some of the reasons why you should consider having a pet insurance plan for your Selkirk Rex:

To help you with the annual check-up: A Selkirk Rex needs an annual medical examination by a licensed veterinarian at least once per year. This check-up is critical because it helps your vet identify severe health conditions or diseases before they become too expensive to treat. Your pet insurance plan can cover the cost of this annual check-up.

Cover the cost of vaccinations: Vaccinations are essential in protecting your cat against infectious diseases and other health conditions. Vaccinations are recommended once or twice annually, depending on the age and health status of your Selkirk Rex. A pet insurance plan can cover the cost of these vaccines.

To cover the expense of medications: Pet medications such as pain killers, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs can be pretty expensive. A pet insurance plan can come in handy in helping you save some money.

Common health conditions for a Selkirk Rex

Although the Selkirk Rex is generally healthy, some health conditions can be seen in the breed. Here are common health conditions for a Selkirk Rex:

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): is a heart condition where the left ventricle becomes thickened. It’s widespread in cats, particularly males. The disease can cause sudden death in cats, but treatment can help ease the symptoms.
  • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD): This genetic condition causes cysts to form on the kidneys. It can lead to renal failure if it’s left untreated. Many breeds carry the gene, including the Selkirk Rex, but most breeders have eliminated it from their lines by testing their cats before they breed them.
  • Hereditary Myopathy: This inherited condition causes generalized muscle weakness and muscle wasting. This condition may not be evident until later in life when cats show signs of muscle weakness and poor coordination. There is no cure for hereditary myopathy, but affected cats can live everyday lives if care is taken to keep them from falling off of furniture or downstairs.
  • Gingivitis/periodontal disease: Gingivitis is the inflammation of your cat’s gums. It usually begins when plaque, a sticky layer of clear bacteria that sticks to your cat’s teeth and gums, is not removed. Plaque hardens into tartar or calculus, which irritates your cat’s gums further. Periodontal disease occurs when plaque goes unchecked, and it causes tooth loss and pain in your cat.
  • Hip dysplasia: a malformation of the hip joint, is the most common skeletal disease in cats. Older cats often develop the degenerative joint disease as well. Symptoms include pain and lameness. Your veterinarian may recommend weight loss, medications, and surgery in severe cases.

What does pet insurance cover for a Selkirk Rex?

Pet insurance does vary from company to company and policy to policy, but here are some of the types of things your coverage may include:

  • Accidents: If your pet has an accident, pet insurance can cover treatment costs. This includes the cost of medication, diagnostic tests, and visits to the vet. It can also cover expenses for more severe injuries, such as a broken bone or poisoning.
  • Illness: Pet insurance can help you protect your pet against illnesses. It can cover diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and arthritis. Illness protection will also cover common conditions like colitis, parvovirus, and kennel cough.
  • Routine care: Pet insurance won’t just help you when your pet becomes ill or has an accident. You can also get pet insurance that covers routine care so that regular check-ups and vaccinations are covered. This helps you take better care of your pet’s health.

How are pet insurance premiums determined for a Selkirk Rex?

Many factors go into the cost of an insurance policy. Some are related to the pet, and you and your household determine some. Here are the factors that can affect the price of pet insurance:

  • Location: If you live in a larger city, the costs of your premiums will be higher than if you lived in a smaller town or suburb. This is because vet bills are generally higher in urban areas than in rural or suburban areas.
  • Age: The older your pet gets, the more expensive their health insurance coverage is. A 5-year-old cat will have much lower costs than one who is ten years old. In most cases, you may have trouble obtaining health insurance for a cat after age 10, but some companies offer more senior cats policies.
  • Deductible: The deductible is the amount of money you’re willing to spend out-of-pocket before your pet insurance will kick in and start paying for your pet’s medical care. The higher the deductible you choose, the lower your monthly premiums.
  • Gender: Anecdotally, cats incur fewer vet bills than dogs, but they also live longer. In general, males have a higher incidence of health problems than females. If you have a male cat, expect to pay more than if you have a female.

How to choose the best pet insurance plan for a Selkirk Rex

To get your pet the best possible insurance, you need to research. Here are a few things you should consider when choosing a policy:

  • Check out the company’s reputation:  It’s essential to do proper research on any pet insurance company you’re considering. There are plenty of options out there when it comes to pet coverage. Luckily, there are plenty of online resources that can help you narrow down your choices.
  • Consider your budget: Pet insurance is designed to help offset the costs of unexpected illness or injury, but you have to consider your budget as well. How much can you reasonably afford each month? This will help determine what deductible, reimbursement level, and annual limit you can afford.
  • Consider pre-existing conditions: Some plans may not cover pre-existing conditions, such as arthritis. So if you think your cat or dog will need coverage for such a problem down the road, it may be worth choosing a policy that protects against those issues, even if it costs more.
  • Define your needs: You need to decide what coverage is essential to you. Will you want routine check-ups and vaccinations covered? How much coverage do you want for dental care? You will have to figure out these things before getting insurance for your cat.
