In depth review on Pawp

Pawp is not a traditional insurer that reimburses for vet visits or prescription drugs. This company offers pet owners access to an emergency fund of up to $3,000 when expensive treatments are required for their pet, such as a stroke, ventricular failure, and orthopaedic surgeries.

A National Pet Owners Survey (NPOS) revealed that more than 85 million households have pets. The average medical cost for pets is estimated between $300-$500 annually. These costs may run into several thousand dollars when your pet develops an illness, injury, or a lifetime condition.

Pawp will protect you from incurring huge medical expenses during unexpected events with its emergency fund,  whether your pet is young, old, or has a pre-existing condition. The platform only covers incidents, and the incident must be evaluated and approved by the virtual vets before proceeding to pay for the vet bill.

Pawp is best for

  • Covering pre-existing health conditions: It does not require pets to undergo a medical examination before enrollment. If your dog/cat has a pre-existing medical condition, you can still access the emergency fund when the need arises.
  • Multi-pet coverage: It provides coverage for up to 6 pets per household.
  • Low monthly premiums: The monthly premium is $24, which translates into $288 annually. This cost is relatively low compared to the $3,000 emergency medical fund it offers in return.

Pawp benefits

  • Emergency fund: Access to emergency funds protects your pocket from incurring huge medical expenses during unexpected times.
  • 24/7 access to virtual veterinary doctors: You’ll have virtual access to a team of licensed vets. The veterinary doctors are available 24/7 and can be accessed through the face-to-face video option.
  • Personalized veterinary recommendations: Before proceeding with a medical procedure, Pawp offers virtual doctors to assess the condition to approve the funds. These doctors offer personalized services to understand your pet’s condition and recommend the best course of action.
  • Unlimited and fast access to customer support: You can access customer support at any time as many times as you wish.
  • No deductibles: You will not Incur any deductibles, co-pay, or co-insurance costs.

Pawp drawbacks

  • Does not offer wellness coverage: Pawp does not provide wellness policies, such as vaccinations, for preventing issues from arising with your pet’s health.
  • Limited to one emergency visit per year: You can only use your emergency funds once per year. Even if you don’t use the full $3,000, you won’t be eligible to use the remaining amount. However, the platform has countered this limitation with unlimited access to virtual doctors 24/7.

Factors contributing to the overall rating

Policy application

4.5

Anyone older than 18 years of age is eligible to purchase Pawp’s policy. Since it is an exclusively digital platform, you need to create a membership account by entering:

  • Your name
  • Email address
  • Address

You need to agree to the terms and make your monthly payment via credit or debit card. They also accept PayPal and Apple Pay.

Once you have made the payment, the platform provides a 14-day waiting period to access the emergency fund. If you have an unfortunate event before the 14-day, then you will have to incur the costs out of your pocket. If you deactivate your account and wish to reactivate it (purchasing the policy again), you will have to go through the waiting period again.

To continue accessing the emergency fund, you need to ensure your payments are up to date.

Pet owners who can access the emergency fund are required to consult first with the veterinary doctors on the platform. Pawp’s vets will assess the situation and if the situation is life-threatening, your emergency funds will be activated, and you will need to take the pet for emergency care within 4 hours.

The digital platform does not restrict you to any particular veterinary clinic. However, if you visit one that requires a deposit first, you may have to incur the deposit cost, which will then be reimbursed by the clinic when Pawp pays for your vet bill.

Fees and coverages

4.5

Pawp charges a flat monthly premium of $24, which is billed on every date of your sign-up, which translates into $288 annually. This monthly premium does not go higher or lower. In return, the platform offers up to $3,000 coverage.

Preventive care coverage

The platform does not provide coverage on preventive care as it’s strictly an emergency-only policy.

Healthcare coverage

Pawp provides coverage to all health-related issues that have been evaluated and determined as an emergency by veterinary doctors.

According to the platform, an emergency is an unexpected and life-threatening occurrence that needs immediate medical intervention. Some of the emergencies listed on the site include:

  • Toxic ingestion
  • Chocking
  • Difficulty in Breathing
  • Severe Blockages
  • Severe Internal Injuries
  • Severe External injuries.

The fund will still cover an emergency arising from your pet’s pre-existing condition.

Pawp’s emergency fund does not apply to the following:

  • Deworming
  • Vaccines
  • X-rays and Ultrasounds that are not related to the emergency
  • Prescription Drugs that are not associated with the emergency procedure
  • Doctor Appointments

You will need to contact a vet from the platform using the video chat option to evaluate your pet and determine if the situation can be classified as an emergency. If you cannot use the video call option, you can record a one-minute video recording of the pet and share it with the vets.

Vet selection

Pawp offers unlimited access to vets from their platform. The minimum requirement of becoming a vet on the platform is five years of experience in practicing veterinary medicine. It also applies other stringent measures during the interview process to ensure the selected veterinary doctors are competent enough.

If you want to speak to a veterinary doctor from the platform, you need to click on the “Talk To A Vet” option located on the website’s top right. You need to state why you want to speak with a vet and select if you wish to chat or make a video call.

You can view the estimated waiting time from the platform. The support staff will match you with the right vet to address all your concerns.

Pets covered

The digital platform covers up to 6 pets per household on the $24 monthly premium. There is no limitation on age, breed, size, or even pre-existing conditions. You need to create a pet profile in your Pawp account. To add another pet, you need to click on the “Switch Pet”, and you will be redirected to the “Add Another Pet” option.

You only need to admit your pet at a vet clinic, and once you have the final invoice, you inform the vet clinic to contact Pawp by phone to confirm the invoice.

Also, you need to send the invoice via email to emergency@pawp.com. The platform reviews the invoice and pays the funds directly to the vet clinic. In case you paid a deposit earlier, you need to follow up with the clinic for reimbursement.
